Leanne M ChristieVancouver, BC
Urban Oil painter Leanne M Christie has a reputation for complex paintings that are built with powerful brushwork and the sophisticated manipulation of white. She paints full time in her Vancouver studio and, when not accompanied by her PADS puppy in training, her 50km cycling commute from her home in Coquitlam, gives Christie an intimate kinship with the flow of the urban streets. The unrehearsed transitory moments provide the abundant source of her paintings.
Born and raised in South Africa, Christie moved to the Canadian West Coast in the late 2000's after a period of 10 years abroad that had originated as a 2 week holiday after the completion of her Bachelor of Fine Art from Rhodes University.
Christie's paintings are at first understood by the viewer whose participation is then demanded by her relentless harnessing of the communicative properties unique to oil painting. The distilled open relationship between the painter and the slow drying oil painting is the unique characteristic of the medium that Christie burrows into in order to activate the complexity that is developed through the alchemy of passive and active time. Active time that is dependant on the relationships that the viewer is able to develop with the work.
A few words
The landscape of memory is anchored in the narratives of physical spaces that provoke long-forgotten associations with who we are, who they were and where we are in the malleable paradigms that form soft parameters around our thinking. The urban landscape is saviour and betrayer. It's spaces unsettle our ideas and provoke rapid reevaluation when they force us to intimately engage with new narratives and identities and the urban is fluid, adapting and moulding itself to our needs and aspirations. Inevitably, and often with great rapidity, the urban landscape erodes and eventually erases the physical triggers that it pretends to guard and in doing so, we find ourselves loosed as we forget to remember. We are cast deeper into a loss of identity as we grapple with each other. My paintings are explicitly paintings and they grab onto the unchanging significance of paint as a tool for clear communication in the Urban cacophony. Through their sincere commitment to being what they identify as, they pursue a deeper understanding of the inherent qualities of the medium and so, act intuitively on the viewer as a narrative below the superficial subject matter
