Ugur Gallenkus

Istanbul, Turkey

Born in 1990 in Niğde/Turkey, Uğur completed his primary and secondary education in Istanbul. In 2013, he graduated from Anadolu University Department of Business Administration. Upon completing his education, he tried his hand at different jobs. Today, he lives in Istanbul, managing an e-commerce site of a private company.

Today, the world knows Uğur as the artist behind the stories told through his digital collages. In reality, he was a business-school graduate leading an ordinary life when tragedy struck in Syria. Then he saw the little body of AylanKurdi, washed ashore in Turkey.  He felt like he needed to do something, to act, anything not to feel powerless.

He knew nothing about digital art, but he started learning about design programs from online sources. A white-collar worker by day turned into a self-taught digital artist by night. Eventually, this led to an idea which blossomed into what is now known as Parallel Universe.

He cannot explain what brought his artistic side so suddenly to the spotlight – everything happened as if by divine design. He felt a purpose that could not be denied and saw how to start a unique conversation between two seemingly completely opposite scenes.

A Few Words

My collages are a showcase of the world that is willing to go on pretending that everything is normal and the harsh realities that many – even some of those offering compassion – would be happy to sweep under the rug. But I believe my art provided the perspective that could not be ignored anymore, for both sides!

Parallel Universe is a division between comfort and privilege of consumerist society and the consequences of inequality felt by millions of disenfranchised people.

It is also aiming to remind the people of underdeveloped countries that they could find better government, education, or science, sending them a message that they can be as strong and peaceful as the developed countries.
